Summary[]
It's a late summer evening as Doremi's class gathers at the shrine. They are welcome by Shinshuu and step inside to observe the old shrine, in which he will be telling them their last summer story as they do every year. He observes everyone to see them express anxiety, excitement or boredom.
He begins by telling them the story of a man spotting a young girl next to the graves. When he asked the girl what was wrong, she told him that she made a promise to her father to wait for him until he was done with his work. For many days, the man visited the young girl, trying to make her smile. One day, He saw the girl smiling, saying that her dad was done with his work and she will be able to see him. One day, while walking, he spotted a few people at a grave. Once he asked them what was going on, a woman tells him that they were visiting her husband's grave, as he died a few days ago. Turns out, the girl was actually a ghost, and she was waiting for her father so they could pass on together.
Shinshuu looks to see that many of their classmates are frightened by the story, but not as frightened as Hazuki, who was screaming in terror. Eventually everyone heads outside for the courage test. Hazuki is very frightened and she tries to get out of it but the girls calm her down by suggesting she picture Majorika when she feels scared. Everyone takes turns picking strings with numbers to determine the pairings and deciding order: first being two of the SOS trio, who return after a couple minutes and claim to have seen a ghost. Nobody believes them, but Shinshuu mentions that they may have seen his grandfather, who passed away two years ago. His soul hasn't come to terms yet though, but while everyone else can see him, he hasn't been able to.
Next up is Aiko and Nobuko, who step into the cemetery unaware of the ghost following them. They exit with no problems and Nobuko claims to have seen the ghost but Aiko truthfully informs them that they did not. Next in are Hazuki and Yada, and they spend their time discussing the "spell" Aiko and Doremi told Hazuki to try, but feeling the presence of the ghost is enough to make them flee for their lives, and last to go in is Doremi and Shinshuu. She isn't really scared by anything since nobody else mentioned any ghosts, but she notices Shinshuu is walking quickly and asks him to slow down a bit. He explains that he was hoping to see his Grandfather's spirit, because once he died, Shinshuu yelled out that he hated him, and wanted to apologize.
When they return, Doremi is quick to reunite with Aiko and Hazuki and they request to use the restroom. She fills them in on what she found out and the girls decide that they want to help. Hazuki remains hesitant and scared, but she still wants to help.
As they are casting Magical Stage, Shimakura and a very frightened Kotake notice the light. Thinking it was a ghost, they run out of the test.
The girls see a small, carved wooden horse and they start to make their way back. They notice Shinshuu nearby, mentioning that everyone saw a strange light and he came to see what it was. He sees the small carved horse Doremi is holding and asks where the girls found it. They aren't sure how to explain and they follow him to a storage shed full of carvings. Shinshuu explains that he was always very close to his grandfather since his parents were usually very busy for him. One day he was working on a wooden horse and promised to finish it for Shinshuu and give it to him after school. But he didn't get a chance, as he passed away while Shinsuu was at school. Once Shinshuu found out, he yelled out he hated him out of anger and sadness. He didn't mean it, but he wasn't able to handle coming to terms with what happened, and he wanted to apologize for what he said. Because he can't see his grandfather he thinks that it means he hates him now. He apologizes to the girls and asks for a moment to collect his thoughts.
Shinshuu stays in the room by himself, when suddenly, the lights go off. Suddenly, he hears his Grandfather's voice calling him. He looks around and to his shock, he sees his Grandfather. Shinshuu asks why he hasn't come to see him yet and he begin to cry. He apologizes for what he said, and his Grandfather's spirit explains that he didn't hate him, and that he was just trying to fulfill his promise. It meant a lot to him and he's been trying to find the horse carving but he's been unable to, everyone would run away from him. Shinshuu claims he wouldn't have been scared and they share a small laugh. He then goes on to ask his grandfather to teach him how to finish it.
As this is going on, Shimakura walks by and is startled when she hears Shinshuu. She peeks in on him to find him alone in the room.
Meanwhile, the girls want to help but aren't sure how to go about doing it. Aiko suggests they turn into the ghost to try to cheer him up, and Doremi agrees, but before they can transform again Shimakura runs by in a panic to reveal what she saw. Even though he is alone, it looks like someone is there with him. She begins worrying further after seeing the girls have disappeared.
Shinshuu happily admires his craft and he feels much better, as does his grandfather, who feels as though he can rest in peace now. Shinshuu pleadingly asks him not to leave, but his grandfather assures him that he will always be with him. They make a promise on it as he begins to fade away, and Doremi -who was nearby- stops as a breeze picks up. She feels something in the air and shields herself from it as the girls express confusion, and they observe sparkles of light floating away, leading them to realize Shinsuu must have seen his grandfather.
That following morning, Shinshuu is in front of his grandfather's grave in the cemetery. He places the wooden horse on it and leaves.
