Fairies (妖精 Yōsei) are small, magical creatures given to each witch or apprentice after passing the Level 9 Witch Exam. They are born from crystal balls that they use for shelter afterward and must live under the care and guidance of their owner.

Appearance[]

Most fairies are shown to resemble their respective counterparts.

Baby and Child Stage[]

Fairies in their juvenile stage are about hand sized and have fair skin with blushed cheeks and big eyes resembling their partners. Their antennae and hair are pastel and resemble their partners, and some may wear accessories to match. They have a simple ruffled dress and lighter colored collar. They have thin, simplified arms with no visible fingers unless they need them to be, much like their mouth.

Teenager[]

In their adolescent form, fairies are larger in size with a fully visible body. The skin is still pale, and their facial features, hair, and antennae change in proportion to their new body. Each fairy wears a short, pale-colored dress with the fabric cut at the shoulders to reveal a pastel shirt, and a gem in their color rests on their chest. They also gain white booties and a white cap with pastel rim.

Adult[]

Fully-grown fairies gain a physically developed body with more vibrant colors. The hair and antennae lengthen, and some gain makeup and wear earrings. While the outfits tend to differ among fairies, most are shown wearing a white or colored one-piece outfit with puffy silk or lace fabric, jewelry, no shoes, nor hats.

Skills and Talents[]

Initially, fairies are taught to hide and use their crystal ball, which are seen as completely transparent to everyone but their owners. Additionally, they can turn invisible if needed, though it requires a conscious effort from them to do so. Fairies are also capable of taking the appearance of their owner, but until reaching "adult" stage they can only speak their own name. As an adult, they will also gain the ability to transform into a cat.

Fairies can also enter various magical objects, such as the Patraine computer and Recipe Diary (the later one seemingly requiring fairies to access its library). This often requires their owners to send them inside using a special chant, and sometimes special equipment like the Patissière uniform's Inkamu (although adult fairies like Lala seem to be able to enter at will). If the fairy entering these objects aren't of adolescent age, their form will change as such until they have completely exited the magical object (which could be the intended effect of the chant).

Throughout their lives, fairies can do many basic tasks, such as lifting or carrying items, tending to babies, writing, and assisting their owner. They are especially useful to human witch apprentices, as their shapeshifting allows them to take the place of their owners and cover for them while they are using magic during school or work, or entering the witch world.

Trivia[]

  • As revealed in Ojamajo Doremi Dokkān!, if the Witch Apprentice forfeits in becoming a full witch, then their Fairy will have to sleep inside a magical box until the next Witch Apprentice has come. This law was overruled by Hana, who offers all fairies to become her partners instead.
  • Hehe is the only known fairy with dark or tanned skin.
  • In production, the baby fairies were originally intended to have visible mouths.
  • All fairies have a particular fondness for drinking Oy! Cola.
